Is GARAGE EPOXY Floor Coating Slippery?

Generally speaking, any wet floor covering will be slippery and you need to take extra care when stepping over it. 

Anti slip media is an additive and are available in different sizes and types and can be added to epoxy system topcoats to provide slip resistance. Smooth floors are more slippery than textured or rough floors but generally rougher the floor, the harder it is to keep it clean.

  1. Sand - Specialised sand is the cheapest form of anti slip media and comes in different grades.
  2. Aluminum Oxide - this type of antislip media will last much longer than sand and will provide better slip resistance and a good size to be mixed in or broadcasted over an epoxy system applied to a garage floor or workshop floor is 60mesh. 
  3. Floating Antislip media is the most suitable type of antislip media for the Garage floor Epoxy Coating project, this type of media is not too harsh and can be easily cleaned while it provides a safe surface to walk on. 

A Garage Floor is classified as an internal floor but is exposed to some of the external elements such as dirt, rainwater, and exposure to UV. Garage Floor Coatings generally come in the following systems and finishes

Smooth Epoxy Finishes

  • Metallic Epoxy Finishes
    Floors done in Metallic epoxy are generally very smooth and have a scratch resistance coating protecting them, these are great for indoor environments but can be very slippery in wet conditions
  • Solid Colour Epoxy Coating
    The 100% Solids Epoxies have self level properties and tend to be more slippery than lower solid products that are applied using a roller. The downside to products with lesser solids content which are available in hardware stores such as Bunnings and paint shops is that quality is much lower and some of them can have up to 55% water or solvent in them to make them easier to apply and we would suggest staying away from any EPOXY product with less than 80% Solids content. 

Rough Epoxy Floors

These types of finishes are achieved by adding coarse sand or Aluminium oxide and these types of floors are good for food processing areas, commercial kitchens, and areas that are constantly wet and are oily and we don't recommend this for garage floors as dirt will get stock in between the anti-slip media and you wont be able to get it out

Half Flake or Partial Flake Epoxy Floors
This type of epoxy floor coating system is made of a solid color epoxy base coat and around 3- 5% of the floor is covered with a flake to provide a decorative floor,  These floors can be slippery and if antislip media is added to the topcoat, it will ruin the look of the finish.

at Sydney Epoxy Floors, we don't recommend or carry out half or partial flake jobs and contractors tend to love this type of finish for the reason that much less material is used to produce partial flake floors and profit margins are higher

Full Flake Epoxy Coating
This system the real deal and most suitable type for residential garage floor coating and a properly applied finish will have a 15+ year life expectancy.

A Typical Garage Coating is made of the following stages

  • Diamond grinding
  • Priming
  • BaseCoat which can be a high solids epoxy coating or Polyaspartic
  • Broadcast flake until the point of rejection
  • Cleaning and vacuuming the flake
  • Applying 1 or multiple clear coats which can be made of Clear epoxy topcoat, Polyurethane Coating or Polyaspartic topcoat

Floors finished in Polyurethane are rougher and dirt will get stuck in between the flake particles and will be harder to keep the floor clean and therefore we don't recommend them for garage floors
